The nature of children’s rights is universal – and so our work at the Office of the Children’s Commissioner for Jersey reaches beyond Jersey. We engage actively in international and regional networks, collaborate with sister commissioners and children’s rights bodies across the UK and Europe, and bring those insights home to benefit children in Jersey.
By participating in networks we share and learn from best-practice approaches: how other jurisdictions promote child participation, embed children’s rights in law, deploy rights-based investigations, monitor implementation of the UNCRC, and use data and research to drive change.
We contribute to, and draw on, international human rights treaties, European policy frameworks and peer-review mechanisms. This global dimension helps us benchmark Jersey’s progress and identify innovative ideas for rights-focused reform.
At the same time we bring a Jersey voice to the international stage: the specific context of an island jurisdiction means we can highlight how rights are realised in unique settings, and we can advocate for children whose voices may be overlooked in smaller jurisdictions.
Ultimately our international work strengthens our home-based work: by linking global standards to local realities, we help ensure children and young people in Jersey benefit from the highest expectations of rights fulfilment. Through collaboration, learning and advocacy, we contribute to a world in which all children – including those in Jersey – thrive, are respected and have their rights fully recognised.
ENOC is a European network of independent children’s rights institutions (such as Children’s Commissioners and Ombudspersons). It works to promote and protect children’s rights across Europe, support collaboration between members, and influence policy in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
BINOCC is a regional network bringing together Children’s Commissioners and Ombudspersons from across the UK and Ireland. It provides a forum for collaboration, sharing best practice, and coordinating joint work to promote and protect children’s rights across these jurisdictions.
ENYA is a youth participation project established by ENOC. It enables children and young people from across Europe to contribute directly to children’s rights work by sharing their views, influencing policy discussions, and helping shape recommendations at a European level.
