World Children’s Day 2025: ‘Our Say, Our Right’ film and event

In November 2025, the Office of the Children’s Commissioner for Jersey marked World Children’s Day with the launch of Our Say, Our Right, a youth-led film exploring children’s right to be heard under Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

In November 2025, the Office of the Children’s Commissioner for Jersey (OCCJ) marked World Children’s Day by hosting a special event to launch a youth-led film exploring children’s right to have their voices heard.

World Children’s Day, observed each year on 20 November, celebrates the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The day is recognised globally as an opportunity to promote children’s rights and to ensure that children and young people are at the centre of conversations about the decisions that affect their lives.

The event showcased a short film titled Our Say, Our Right, developed with and by young people in Jersey. The film explored Article 12 of the UNCRC, which recognises every child’s right to express their views freely in matters that affect them and for those views to be taken seriously.

The project was led by a dedicated Youth Advisory Group, who worked closely with the OCCJ team throughout the process. Young people helped shape the concept of the film, contributed to the script, and played an active role in determining how the story should be told.

To ensure the film reflected a wide range of perspectives, the OCCJ also visited schools and youth groups across the Island to deliver activities exploring children’s rights and Article 12. The views shared by young people during these sessions helped inform the narrative of the film.

The World Children’s Day event brought together children and young people, politicians, policymakers, professionals and community partners to watch the film and reflect on the importance of listening to children’s voices in decisions that affect their lives.

By placing young people at the centre of both the film and the event, the project reflected the spirit of World Children’s Day as a day of action for children, by children, while highlighting the importance of meaningful participation in advancing children’s rights in Jersey.
